Facts about teargas and ways you can take to minimize teargas contact

Tear gas are chemical compounds that cause severe irritation to the eyes, respiratory system, and skin.

They are typically used by law enforcement and military personnel for crowd control and to disperse protests.

During the ongoing protests in the country and incase you are a participant, you should ensure that you protect your self in the following ways;

1. Wearing Facemask. Scarves or bandanas large enough to cover your face from nose to chin can serve as substitutes.

2.Shatter-resistant eye protection (e.g. shatter-resistant sunglasses, swim goggles, or a gas mask)

3.Clothing covering all your skin as much as possible

4.Comfortable, closed, protective shoes that you can run in

5.AVOID wearing contact lenses, which can trap irritating chemicals, such as tear gas powder, underneath. If you do wear contacts lenses, keep a full facial gas mask or goggles on at all times.

6.AVOID wearing makeup such as eyeliner, for the same reason.

And incase you get exposed to tear gas, here are some steps you can take to minimize the effects and safely manage the situation:

  1. Move to higher ground: Tear gas is heavier than air, so it tends to sink to low-lying areas. Move to higher ground or an area with better ventilation to reduce exposure.
  2. Cover your mouth and nose: Use a cloth or mask (if available) to cover your mouth and nose to reduce inhalation of the gas. A wet cloth or mask can provide additional protection by filtering out some of the particles.
  3. Protect your eyes: If possible, wear goggles or eyeglasses (not contact lenses) to protect your eyes from irritation and tearing. If you don’t have goggles, cover your eyes with a cloth and keep them closed as much as possible.
  4. Stay calm and breathe slowly: Try to remain calm to avoid inhaling more gas than necessary. Breathe slowly and deeply to avoid panic, which can increase your respiratory rate and expose you to more gas.
  5. Rinse exposed skin: If tear gas comes into contact with your skin, rinse the affected area with cool water and mild soap as soon as you can. Avoid rubbing the area, as this can spread the irritant.
  6. Remove contaminated clothing: If tear gas gets on your clothing, remove it as soon as possible to prevent further exposure. Put on clean clothing and wash contaminated clothing separately from other laundry.
  7. Seek medical attention if needed: If you experience severe symptoms such as difficulty breathing, chest pain, or prolonged irritation despite taking these measures, seek medical help immediately.
  8. Stay informed: Follow local news and official instructions for guidance on how to navigate the situation safely.

Remember, the effects of tear gas are temporary, and most people recover fully with time and basic first aid. However, it’s crucial to take these steps to minimize exposure and mitigate discomfort if you find yourself in a situation where tear gas is deployed.
