Albert Omondi Ojwang, a 31-year-old teacher and well-known social media influencer, died while in police custody on June 8, 2025.
A postmortem examination has now confirmed that he succumbed to serious head injuries caused by blunt force trauma.
The autopsy also found signs of neck compression and multiple soft tissue injuries, suggesting he may have been assaulted before his death.
The autopsy was carried out on Tuesday, June 10, at Nairobi Funeral Home. Leading the examination were Dr. Bernard Midia and Dr. Caroline Njoroge, who worked alongside five other pathologists. Among them were independent observers from the Police Reforms Working Group and the Independent Medico-Legal Unit (IMLU), who were present to ensure the process was transparent and impartial.
The examination had originally been scheduled for Monday, June 9, but was delayed after Chief Government Pathologist Dr. Johansen Oduor stepped down from the case, citing a personal connection to Ojwang that posed a conflict of interest.
Ojwang’s death has raised serious concerns among the public and rights groups, who are now calling for a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding his final hours in custody.
