Oga Obinna Bags KSh 6.1 Million After Winning Defamation Case Against Radio Africa Group

Kenyan media personality and comedian Oga Obinna has every reason to smile  and maybe even dance a little after a Nairobi court awarded him KSh 6.1 million in a defamation case against Radio Africa Group (RAG), Radio Jambo host Massawe Japanni, and socialite Black Cinderella (Maureen Imbayi).

The judgment, delivered on November 5, 2025 by Senior Principal Magistrate Edward Too, marks one of the biggest wins by a Kenyan celebrity against a media giant and a loud reminder that “freedom of speech” isn’t freedom to tarnish reputations.

How It All Started

The drama began in 2024 when Black Cinderella appeared on Massawe Japanni’s show on Radio Jambo, a station owned by Radio Africa Group. During the live interview, she made some serious and damaging allegations about Obinna the kind that spread like wildfire on social media.

Shockingly, no one from the show’s team reached out to Obinna for his side of the story before airing the claims. No evidence was verified, and no correction followed. The comments went viral, leaving Obinna dealing with online trolls, lost deals, and a damaged reputation.

Obinna later sued Radio Africa Group, Massawe, and Black Cinderella, arguing that the broadcast was reckless, false, and meant to humiliate him.

The Court’s Decision
In his ruling, Magistrate Edward Too agreed with Obinna, declaring that the statements were defamatory and caused serious harm to his public image and career.

The court slapped the three defendants with a total payout of KSh 6.1 million, broken down as follows:

• KSh 5 million in general damages (for injury to reputation and emotional distress)
• KSh 500,000 in aggravated damages (for reckless broadcasting without verification)
• KSh 500,000 in lieu of an apology (since they never issued one)
• KSh 100,000 in exemplary damages (as a warning to others)

The court also issued a permanent injunction, meaning none of the parties involved can ever publish or repeat those statements again.

Obinna’s Reaction
Obinna couldn’t hide his excitement after the ruling. Taking to social media, he celebrated the win with his usual humor, writing:

“6 Million easy… we’ll build this house with haterz’ tears.”

He also thanked his legal team for standing by him and warned fellow media personalities to “verify before you vilify.”

Why This Case Matters
This ruling is more than just a personal victory for Obinna  it’s a wake-up call to Kenyan media houses and influencers. It reminds everyone that while the media has the right to inform and entertain, it also has a duty to verify information before putting someone’s name on the line.

The case also shows that digital defamation  including statements made on-air, online, or on social platforms  can lead to serious legal and financial consequences.

The Bigger Picture
Kenya’s entertainment industry thrives on gossip, exclusives, and viral moments. But as this case shows, the line between “trending content” and “legal trouble” is thinner than ever.

For Obinna, this is not just justice it’s redemption. For others in the spotlight, it’s a lesson in protecting your name. And for media professionals, it’s a reminder that integrity still pays or in this case, saves you millions.

Oga Obinna’s KSh 6.1 million win is a victory for accountability and professionalism in Kenya’s entertainment scene. As he enjoys his legal triumph, fans are already flooding his socials with congratulatory messages and maybe a few jokes about who’s footing the bill.
